Why we fear mice

Scientists might say that the fear of mice is a triggered response. You see one running across your kitchen floor and it startles you. The startling response then leads to a pronounced fear. Unfortunately, the fear of mice goes far deeper than seeing a rodent out of place.

  • Disease: Mice are vectors. They carry diseases, a lot of scary diseases. You might be familiar with Hantavirus, which is a nasty sickness that causes your lungs to fill with fluid. You might have even heard of Salmonellosis, but there are so many more diseases you may have never heard about. In fact, according to the Center for Disease Control, mice and rodents are responsible for the spread of nearly thirty different diseases.
  • Destructive: Mice love to chew. In fact, they have to chew and gnaw on things because their front teeth never stop growing. They are compelled to keep wearing down their teeth. This means they are going to chew holes in your drywall, furniture, and insulation. Mice will even chew on electrical wiring. This is the most destructive damage they inflict on your home because a broken wire can spark which could result in a catastrophic house fire. That’s right, you could lose your home because of a mouse infestation.
  • Devious: Have you ever heard that women are more afraid of mice than men? Scientists believe this might be true, but not for the reasons you might think. Mice are sensitive to pheromones and can actually smell the difference between a man and a woman. When they smell a man, the mice become stressed and want to hide. When mice smell a female, they are bolder. That means women are going to see more mice than men, which gives women them more opportunities to develop a phobia.
