Gopher Information

Did you know that gophers helped to restore the ecosystem of Mount Saint Helens? You see, because gophers live underground, many were able to survive the ash. After the explosion, gophers continued to do their thing and create those telltale mounds of dirt. Those mounds of fresh dirt on top of the barren ash made areas where seeds could grow and plants flourish. Without the help of the humble gopher, Mount Saint Helens would have taken a lot longer to heal. It is easy to appreciate the work of gophers, when they are far away from your home. When gophers invade your yard, it is becomes difficult to appreciate the little rodent. It won’t take a gopher long to transform your beautiful yard into piles of dirt.

General Information

Gophers spend most of their life living underground. They eat a variety of seeds, berries, roots, bulbs, vegetation, and even insects. In their never ending search for food, they create a vast network of tunnels and burrows. Since gophers are hoarders, they have large cheeks where they store their collected food. Gophers are squatty rodents with a set of powerful front claws which allows them to dig through the earth. They have brownish fur, beady black eyes, and a set of large front teeth on the top and bottom of their mouth. While most of their burrows are only a few inches below the surface, the burrows used for nesting are often six feet underground.

The Signs of an Infestation

It is easy to know if you have gophers. All you need to do is look in your yard and you will see the telltale fan-shaped mounds of fresh dirt. These can be found in your flower beds or your grass. Gophers cause a lot of damage in agricultural fields. Not only do they eat the plants but their burrows alter water flow, and can even hurt animals. Horses have been known to break legs when running through gopher infested fields.
