The History

The origin of fearing Friday the thirteenth has an unclear origin. There are not many written details about the day being anything abnormal before the 19th century. The fear of the number thirteen has been in existence quite a bit longer. Many trace the fear back to the last supper where Jesus and his Twelve Apostles dined together and shortly after he was crucified. Even Norse history shows the dislike for the number thirteen, where Odin dined with 11 of his closest friends. Loki the god of turmoil and evil showed up as the thirteenth person and crashed the party. You can go back even farther to the Babylonian times in the 1770 BC and you will notice that the number thirteen is skipped on their lists of laws. The reputation of the number thirteen has only increased over time.

Things to Avoid Doing on Friday the Thirteenth

While some people refuse to get out of bed on Friday the 13th, if you find that you have to get out and do stuff there is a list of things you should avoid doing in order to prevent premature death or severe bad luck. For instance, if you want to avoid bad luck, you should not let a black cat cross your path. You should never walk under a ladder, and you should avoid breaking a mirror. If you do break a mirror, you are looking at seven years of bad luck. Instead of using a hand mirror, you might want to use a more secure wall mirror, or just avoid looking at mirrors on Friday the thirteenth. Your hair might decide to have a bad hair day, but if you avoid looking at mirrors, you can smile knowing that it will only be for one day. (Or three, because sometimes there can be as many as three Fridays a year that mingle with the thirteenth.) Another thing to avoid is killing a spider. That’s right; you should not kill a spider on Friday the thirteenth.
