Hornets

The last thing you want to do is upset a nest of bald faced hornets. They will vigorously defend their nests from anyone that gets a little too close. Cautious should always be used around hornet nests, entire colonies can become enraged enough to attack. Unlike honey bees, hornets can sting you repeatedly. You should be even more cautious if anyone in your family is allergic. Here at Pointe Pest Control, we want to help you protect your home and family from stinging pests.

General Information

Bald faced hornets have distinct black and white alternating colors. Bald faced hornets build their nests above ground, usually hanging from tree limbs or other vegetation. The nest itself is made of a grey papery material that is created from hornet saliva and chewed up wood. The nest is ball shaped and the entrance to the nest is usually located on the bottom. While you will often find their nest hanging from tree limbs, they have been found under the eaves of homes and sometimes inside of attics. The bald faced hornet is extremely aggressive. They will sting you with little to no provocation. Their stings can be painful, but not life threatening unless you are allergic.

The Signs of an Infestation

The best way to know if you have a bald faced hornet problem is to find their nest. Remember that they prefer to build their nest in trees. Sometimes they will chose dense trees, like conifers, so their nest might be more difficult to spot. Another way to know if you have an infestation is a significant increase in hornets. Seeing a few here and there is common, but if you suddenly notice large numbers flying around your yard, it might mean that you have an active nest close to your home.

Treatment

There are plenty of do it yourselfers out there, but you should always use caution around hornet nests. Sometimes injuries can occur, but they aren’t from the hornets. A homeowner with a hornet nest went outside and decided to spray. Unfortunately, he was standing below the nest and all the chemical he used rained down on his head and shoulders. When he started feeling ill, he went to the hospital where it was discovered that he had a high amount of pesticides in his blood stream. When you call the professionals at Pointe Pest Control, you don’t have to worry. We have the training, gear, and tools we need to keep ourselves safe. No matter how big or small, if you have an infestation of hornets then we have a solution.
