Wasps Circling Your Home

With over 30,000 identified species of wasps, they make up an incredibly diverse and varied type of insect. Most people recognize them by their bright yellow and black bodies, painful stings and angry buzzing as they fly around our picnics and yards, trying to sample our food, trash and flowers. Wasps, like many pests, have their places in nature, but too close to our homes and families, they become a problem and a real threat that you need professional wasp control to help you out.

General Information

Wasps are easily recognized by their long, narrow bodies and ultra thin waist. Their abdomen and thorax are separated by what is called a petiole. Honey bees are usually fuzzier while wasps have a shiny, hairless appearance. There are many types of wasps however and not all of them are yellow and black. They range in color from brown to red or even bright red or metallic blue. Some wasps are social wasps and other kinds are solitary. Social wasps are dangerous because when threatened, they alert their entire hive of danger using pheromones. Once alerted of your presence, they will attack. Wasps can be aggressive and unlike bees who can only sting once, wasps can repeatedly sting and inject venom. Wasps around your home can make enjoying your yard difficult.

The Signs of an Infestation

Wasps build their nests around your home typically because your home has a nice, protected spot to build a hive as well as a nearby food source. Wasp nests vary in size but if left unrestricted, their hives can become very large. Honey bees make their hives out of a waxy substance they create but wasps paperlike hives by gathering dead wood and plant stems and chewing it up with their mandibles. Once mixed with their saliva, they can spread this paper goo that dries into a firm, papery texture. They like their nests to stay protected from the elements and even though there is a fair amount of waxy waterproofing in the paper, they love to build their nests under your porch, in your drain pipes and under the eave of your roof. They love sticky, sweet and meaty garbage scraps so keeping your trash cans uncovered keeps them around longer. Pet food left out or crumbs from last night’s barbeque are like gold mines to a wasp. Keeping your yard free of temptations for wasps will help keep them away but routine wasp control is the real solution.
