Situated on the southern end of Puget Sound, Olympia is the capital of Washington State, making it a hub for businesses and home for more than 50,000 people. At Pointe Pest Control, you can count on our Olympia termite control experts to ensure you are protected. Our knowledge, skill, and decades’ worth of experience prevent termites from causing extensive damage to your property.

The Problem With Termites In Olympia

Termites are one of the most common household pests in Olympia and one of the most destructive. By the time you see them, there is a good chance that you are dealing with an infestation. There are two types of termites found in the Pacific Northwest:

  • Dampwood termites: As the name implies, these live in wet, soggy areas on your property, such as wood piles, old tree stumps, or rotted decks and sheds. While they may occasionally fly into your home, an infestation is unlikely. Generally, removing any wet wood will eliminate the problem.
  • Subterranean termites: As opposed to dampwood termites, these are the real villains behind most termite damage in Olympia. As their name implies, they live underground and can quickly infest your home through cracks or gaps in the foundation. By the time you actually see one of these destructive pests, the colony is likely to number in the tens of thousands.

Subterranean termites love gravel and sandy soil and can quickly travel between homes and other structures on your property. They cause extensive amounts of damage and can cost homeowners more in replacement and repair costs than flooding, fires, or major storms combined.

Signs of a Termite Infestation

Termites are small, winged creatures that can measure up to an inch in length, depending on the specific type. While the termites in charge of reproduction in the colony may be black or brown, resembling flying ants, worker termites often appear opaque or even white in color. Subterranean termites are used to living underground and as such, are particularly good at burrowing and hiding in small places. Rather than looking for these pests, you are likely to have more success looking for actual signs of a termite infestation. These include:

  • Holes or hollowed areas in wood around your home, which termites create as they eat their way through;
  • Small mud tubes in walls or around your home’s foundation, which termites build and use as a primary residence;
  • Termite waste, which has a salt and pepper appearance;
  • General destruction of property, such as drooping or discolored drywall, paint that appears to be peeling or chipped, buckling floorboards, and wood that crumbles into dust.

If you suspect termites are doing damage in your home or notice any of the above signs, it is important to contact our Olympia termite control experts at Pointe Pest Control right away.
