Summer in Pasco brings the Columbia Cup Hydroplane Race, where specialty boats scream along the Columbia River. Summer also brings yellow jackets and paper wasps, where buzzing dive bombers cause a different type of scream. Pointe Pest Control can help you reclaim your summer with our anti-wasp arsenal.
Yellow Jackets
The most aggressive wasp species is the yellow jacket. If you happen to get anywhere near a nest, they’ll attack with vengeance. Like all wasps, yellow jackets have a rapid repeat stinger. They can keep on stinging until they’re dead. If their backside wasn’t painful enough, they bite too. Yellow jackets have sharp mandibles used for sheering meat. When angered, they chomp human skin. Yellow jackets prefer to nest in dry hollow areas. They can be found in holes around foundations, inside old couches or up in your attic.
Paper Wasps
Though not as aggressive as the yellow jacket, paper wasps are still mean. Named after how they build their nests, paper wasps colonies are found in dry areas; under eves, decks, playground equipment or inside dense vegetation. Disturbances to the nest will cause the workers to release alarm pheromones and soon the entire colony is racing and ready for a fight. Foods high in sugar and protein are the mainstay of the paper wasp. If you’re having a backyard barbeque, watch out. The pop and meat will attract both wasps and yellow jackets. The hot months of July and August are when both species are most aggressive.
