Stink Bug Information

There is a reason they are called stink bugs. If you find one and disturb it, you will be hit with a pungent chemically odor that you will not find to be appealing. Sting bugs can be pests to vegetables and fruit. They can cause significant damage to apples, peaches, peppers and tomatoes. Since stink bugs love to overwinter inside of the safety of your attic, there is a chance you will find them invading your home when the weather warms up. When it comes to stink bug infestations, you can rely upon the experts with Pointe Pest Control. We have the experience, tools, and training you can count upon.

General Information

Sting bugs come in a variety of different colors. Some of the more common varieties are the green stink bug and the invasive, brown marmorated stink bug. Their bodies are shield shaped and look like small pentagons. Sting bugs have piercing mouth parts that they use to penetrate fruit, vegetables and other vegetation in order to drink sap and plant fluids. Since they are insects, they have six legs. They even have a pair of antennae.

The Signs of an Infestation

If your vegetable garden or fruit trees are being hit, you will notice they are covered in small bruises. Fruit and vegetables will often rot after they have been attacked. Stink bugs lay a large number of eggs on the underside of plant leaves. They will be arranged in different patterns depending on the species of stink bug, but you will notice a lot of eggs. When the eggs hatch, there will be a number of nymphs. Nymphs do the same type of damage as adults, but they are a lot smaller. When it comes to your home, the signs of an infestation will change. As the weather becomes cooler in the fall, stink bugs will automatically look for a place to warm up. The will use the southern facing side of your house and sunbathe. We have seen entire sides of homes covered in stink bugs. As winter approaches the adult stink bugs will look for a sheltered place to overwinter. If they can find a way into your attic, they will swarm it in vast numbers. Sometimes the heat from your home can cause them to wake up and find a way into the main part of your home.
