The Infamous House Mouse

While cartoons try to make them look fluffy and lovable, a mouse is all about destruction. They want to steal your food, and ruin your home and your health. There is nothing fluffy and lovable about an infestation of mice. Their front teeth constantly grow, so they will chew on everything. They also spread a large number of viruses, parasites, and harmful bacteria. Mice can actually carry as many as 200 pathogens that can make you sick. The best thing you can do with an infestation of mice is to get rid of it.

General Information

The house mouse is small and furry. They are light to dark brown in color. An adult house mouse will be about 3 inches in length, which is about the length of an average adult index finger. They have a hairless tail that is a bit longer than their bodies. Mice love to eat and will raid your food anywhere from 15 to twenty times each day. A house mouse can fit through a hole that is a little smaller than a nickel. They usually get into homes through gaps around gas pipes, doors, or electrical conduits. Under ideal conditions, a single female mouse can produce nearly 150 offspring in a single year. Due to their rapid breading, it is easy to see how a few mice can become a massive infestation in a short amount of time.

The Signs of an Infestation

House mice are usually nocturnal. They prefer to sneak around and look for food at night. If food becomes scarce, they will begin to search for it in the middle of the day. If you spot a mouse, the chances are high that there are a whole lot more. One of the best signs of an infestation is their droppings. A single mouse can produce anywhere from 40 to 100 droppings in a day. Their droppings are rod-shaped and pinched at either end. You will find their droppings on the floor along walls. Another sign of an infestation is the destruction they cause. Mice love to chew and will gnaw on walls, baseboards, cabinets, and especially food containers. The last sign happens at night. If you hear the pitter-patter of small rodent feet or squeaks, you might have an infestation.
