LEARNING ABOUT NORWAY RATS

Dealing with an infestation of Norway rats will make you yearn for relief. Norway rats are also called sewer rats. There is a reason for this, Norway rats are adept swimmers. They use their back legs as oars and their front legs to steer. Their tails come in handy when they are swimming as well. Did you know that a Norway rat can keep swim for three days? Their abilities to climb vertical surfaces, fit through small holes, and swim allows them to easily travel up sewer pipes and into your toilet. While this is more of a problem in large urban areas, rats are smart and very capable of infesting any home. If you want to eliminate an infestation of Norway Rats you can count on the professional technicians found here at Pointe Pest Control. Rat elimination is what we do best.

General Information

Norway rats are bigger than mice, and more aggressive than other species of rodent. They have a blunt nose with small beady eyes and small ears. Unlike roof rats which have long tails, the tails of a Norway rat will be shorter than the length of their bodies. Their coarse fur is often brown in color, but it can vary dramatically.

The Signs of an Infestation

Rat infestations are often difficult to detect, because they like to stay hidden. For this reason, you will want to look for the signs of an infestation. The very first sign that something is going on will be the sounds. Homeowners will often hear strange sounds at night when things should be quiet in the home. Rats will crawl around your kitchen, attic, and crawlspace and make noise doing it. The next sign of a Norway rat infestation will be their droppings. If you begin seeing a lot of rod shaped objects about a half inch in length with blunt ends, your level of suspicion should raise significantly. While their droppings are often shiny and black, they can vary in color depending on the diet of the rat. The sign of an infestation will be grease marks. Rats like to travel the same routes. If your home has an entry point, you will notice an accumulation of grease where their fur rubs.
