Tips for Selecting a Pest Control Service

By March 21, 2019Misc/Other

Spring is just around the corner but May flowers aren’t the only thing that April showers bring. They also bring annoying bugs of all sorts into your home. Ants, termites, roaches, wasps and more are going to be awakening once the weather turns nice and while you may be looking forward to outdoor barbecues and relaxing by the pool, they will be looking forward to reproducing at as rapid a rate as they can. Meanwhile, they’re going to need food for the rest of their colony which is when they’ll come knocking on your door.

So how do you select a pest control service that will do the job safely and effectively? We’ll answer that very question below.

What Kinds of Pests Do I Need to Worry About?

Pointe Pest Control can manage infestations ranging from ants to rodents of all kinds. Not one insect or other animal that is in your home uninvited is doing you the least bit of good. Not only do rats chew up your insulation and damage your woodwork, their urine and feces spread potentially fatal diseases. While ants may superficially seem like the ‘cleanest’ of insects, they can also do serious damage to your woodwork, chew through your insulation, and draw other creatures such as spiders to whom they are food.

In other words, if you have pests in your home, they’re damaging your property and you should get rid of them sooner rather than later.

Is it Worth Hiring a Pest Control Specialist?

Though our opinion is potentially biased, the answer is, in truth, usually. The problem many homeowners have is that they believe they’re saving money by doing the job themselves. Eventually, when they end up coming to us, they’ve spent more money than they would have had they just come to us in the first place. Certain problems may be manageable with over the counter traps that you can buy, but deploying an effective strategy isn’t just about killing the pests, it’s about keeping them out. That’s why Pointe Pest Control customers end up happy with the results. We can get rid of current infestations and prevent future ones.

DIY Methods Really Don’t Work?

It’s not that they don’t work. We purchase some of the same products that you can find online. But, as an example, let’s take ant traps. You can purchase ant traps at any home improvement or grocery store near you. Do these ant traps kill ants? Absolutely. Does that mean that you won’t have an ant problem because you have ant traps in your home? Not likely. Purchasing ant traps doesn’t guarantee anything. Not only will some traps not work on all different kinds of ants, but homeowners tend to put these traps behind their couches or underneath their sinks. While this may seem effective, they are actually drawing the ants into your home and while the baits may kill a large number of ants, you’re still going to notice ants in your home.

How Do I Know a Pest Control Specialist is Legit?

While no pest control specialist can guarantee that a treatment will work on the first try, a quality pest control service should give you an idea of how the treatments will work and what you can expect during the process. This gives you an idea of what you’re looking for and allows you to gauge the success of the treatment.

In addition, you want to make sure that your pest control team is certified to work with the sometimes-dangerous chemicals and equipment that we have to work with. If they don’t have a certified commercial pesticide applicator providing your service then they are not running a legitimate or legal business.

Lastly, you should be wary of pest control technicians who do any of the following:

  • Offer pest control as a package deal with general home cleaning services or home repair;
  • Offer a reduced price for immediate treatment based on ‘leftover’ materials from a previous job; or
  • Attempt to pressure you into a contract by making claims about the state of your home.

Unfortunately, there are some scammers out there who make our trade more difficult by fostering mistrust of our industry.
