Wasp FAQ

Why Do I Have Wasps?

There are many varieties of wasps, but there are some common reasons they choose a property to build a nest on.  It can be as simple as good nesting spots like soffits, eaves, and rain gutters.  If food and drink are left out or spilled it can attract wasps.

Garbage cans that aren’t covered or emptied on a regular basis also attract wasps.  In addition, properties that have a lot of spiders and other insects can attract wasps, as they are a source of food and in some cases procreation in some species.

Are Wasps Dangerous?

Having a wasp infestation can make being outside unpleasant even if they are not stinging. Wasps don’t often plan out attacks but may become aggressive if they feel threatened.  Stings are painful but rarely life-threatening without a wasp sting allergy.

What Are Wasp Sting Symptoms & Treatment?

Wasp stings hurt, but with first aid, they can be treated at home.  If someone has an allergy to wasp stings, immediate medical attention should be sought.

Symptoms from a wasp sting include

  • Localized pain at the sting
  • Confusion,
  • Dizziness,
  • Difficulty breathing,
  • Shock,
  • Vomiting,
  • Welts,
  • Itching, and
  • Inflammation

Treating a wasp sting

  1. Wash the sting with soap and water.  This step helps draw out wasp venom, and it helps prevent infection around the wound.
  2. Take a pain reliever and use cold water and/or ice to help with discomfort.
  3. Use oral allergy medications.  Antihistamines will help reduce swelling.
  4. Apply either hydrocortisone or calamine topically to help with redness, swelling, and itching.
