Why Should Moses Lake
Rodent Control Be a Priority?

As the largest city in Grant County, Moses Lake only continues to expand and grow. Unfortunately, as more and more people come to revel in the beauty of the area, so too do rodents. Rodents and people often live in close proximity to each other because humans can provide a great source of water, food, and shelter for these animals. Needless to say, people never enjoy sharing their space with rodents such as mice and rats. Rodents carry many diseases, and they can quickly destroy the contents inside a home. If you have seen these critters in your house, it is time to speak to a Moses Lake rodent control. specialist.

Identifying Mice and Rats

Rats and mice are fairly easy to identify if you actually see one in your house. Rats are significantly larger than mice and range anywhere between 13 and 18 inches long. That measurement includes the tail of the rat, which is usually relatively short. Mice, on the other hand, are much smaller and can measure anywhere from five to eight inches long.

Although it is fairly easy to distinguish between mice and rats if you see them in your home, not everyone sees the actual pest. In fact, the first sign of rodents in the home is often the droppings they leave wherever they go. The droppings of mice are much smaller and have pointed ends, making them look like black grains of rice. The droppings of rats are fairly small too, but they are bigger than a mouse’s. Rat droppings are approximately the same size as a raisin and they are also blunt and more rounded than mice droppings. Rodent noises may be a sign that you have an infestation, as well.

Rodents in the Home are Very Dangerous

Sharing your space with rodents is highly unsettling, but it also poses many dangers. As rodents move through a space, they will contaminate nearly everything they come across. Rats and mice both have the ability to spread diseases such as E. Coli, salmonellosis, and rat bite fever. Mice can also carry the hantavirus, which is a respiratory disease. Rodents can transmit this disease to people and in some cases, it is fatal. Contrary to what many people think, a person does not have to be bitten by a rodent to become infected with a disease. Rodents will transmit them through their bodily fluids, droppings, and indirectly, through parasites.

The dangers of having rodents in the house do not end with the many diseases they carry, unfortunately. Rats and mice both chew a lot. This is particularly true for rats because their teeth are constantly growing, and chewing helps keep them at a manageable size. As rodents chew through the insulation, siding, drywall, and wallboards within a home, it results in immense property damage. Not only will the personal contents within a home become damaged, but it can also compromise the foundations of buildings.

Preventing Rodents from Entering a Home

The ideal way to deal with rodents is by never having to deal with them at all, so prevention is key. Some of the best ways to keep rats and mice out include:

  • Block access: Adult mice only need a hole or gap the size of a dime to fit through and rats only need a space the size of a quarter to get into a home. One of the first rodent prevention steps is to inspect floors, ceilings, walls, and around wires and pipes to look for holes that allow access into your home. When you find a hole, seal it off so rodents cannot get inside.
  • Store food correctly: All food should always be kept in containers that have airtight lids and that are sturdy so rodents cannot access the items inside. Containers such as glass and plastic are better options than cardboard and paper.
  • Clean regularly: Rodents love messes because they provide a place for shelter, food, and water. To keep these rodents out, always wipe down countertops after preparing food and eating, sweep floors, and make sure dirty dishes are not left out.
  • Repair leaky pipes and faucets: When pipes and faucets leak either inside or outside your home, it provides a water source for rodents, so it is essential that you correct these conditions as soon as they develop.
