What Halloween Costumes Would These 6 Pests Wear?

By October 30, 2024Misc/Other
Summary: Halloween is just around the corner, so everyone is getting ready to don their creative costumes. This blog explores the possibilities of common pests dressing up for Halloween, and each costume choice is based on the pest’s real personality traits. The featured pests are: roaches, wasps, praying mantises, termites, fruit flies, and moths. Each pest’s section details their fictional Halloween costume and the reasons why they would choose it. Pointe Pest Control provides reliable pest control services in every season.

Happy (early) Halloween from Pointe Pest Control! This holiday combines two incredible activities: dressing up in a fun costume and eating our favorite candies. Whether or not you’re choosing to dress up tomorrow, it’s fun to see all of the complex, entertaining costumes that people put together.

Bugs and spiders are always seen as either decorations or costumes on Halloween. This affiliation leads us to wonder what pests would do if they had the option to dress up! Let’s find out which costumes 8 of our most infamous pests might choose to wear on their version of Halloween.

Roaches – Beetlejuice Characters

Roaches are still active when the weather is cooler, so we don’t get a break from these disgusting pests. They just need a warm, dark, and damp shelter to hide within as they scavenge for food and reproduce. When roaches feel safe and have access to food, they will not leave that shelter willingly. These pests are nocturnal, so if you see one scurrying around in the daytime, it’s a sign that there are many more hidden nearby.

Since roaches are always in a group, it makes sense that they would only participate in Halloween if they could do a group costume. A movie or TV show would be the perfect inspiration, and this year’s release of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice would be the roach’s first choice. The whole group would make their costumes out of thrifted clothes and random craft items. If any pest can pull off dressing as a group of creepy characters, it’s undoubtedly the roach.

Wasps – Favorite Superhero

Wasps are one of the most aggressive and craft pests, so they would be all over the concept of creating an epic Halloween costume. Some species live on flower nectar or aphid honeydew, but most species kill other insects and feed them to their larvae in the nest. If that nest is disturbed, wasps will attack the threat with their smooth stingers and release alarm pheromones to tell the rest of their colony to do the same.

Wasps seem like they would dress up as their favorite superheroes every Halloween. They’re crafty in real life, so wasps would have no problem creating their own costume at home. The superhero inspiration would change every year, depending on the movies that were released. This year, wasps would probably dress up as Deadpool and all of his variants. They would even make a Wolverine costume for their best friend to wear to the big Halloween party.

Praying Mantises – Inside Out Emotions

Praying mantises aren’t the most common pests, but they are seen in quite a few yards across the country. These carnivorous insects stay still as they patiently wait for their prey to unknowingly come closer. Mantids can be up to five inches long, so they have the physical advantage against most insects. These insects don’t want anything to do with us, but the praying mantis is anything but a gentle giant!

We think the praying mantis would have a bit of fun by dressing up as one of the emotions from the Inside Out films. Since mantids are so still and patient in the real world, we can only imagine what emotion is ruling their insect brain. Between the two movies, there’s enough characters for the mantis to choose from for a decade. They would love making a costume for Disgust due to her green hue, but this pest would probably relate to Ennui (boredom) the most.

Termites – Minions from Despicable Me

Most people don’t think about termites until the pests are already causing problems, but this is the exact problem with these insects. They hide within the tunnels they carve into wood, which is why it’s tough to catch termites until it’s too late. Termite colonies can be hundreds of thousands of bugs strong, so a termite infestation is quite the event. These eusocial insects need to live within their colonies to survive since every pest has a job.

When we think of a carbon-copy army that outnumbers everyone else, one brightly-colored example comes to mind: the Minions from the Despicable Me franchise. Termites would always participate in group costumes, so dressing up as Minions would be easy-peasy for these social pests. The termites would don overalls, silver goggles, and black gloves. They would commit to the bit by also wearing a name tag with the name of their Minion self (Bob, Larry, etc.).

Fruit Flies – M&M’s

Fruit flies are one of the more coordinated social pests out there. The females lay their 500 eggs in overripe produce to give their offspring a reliable food source. Since they only live for a couple of weeks, fruit flies use their time wisely to reproduce and continue their family lines. They aren’t the most dangerous pests, but no one wants to eat a fruit fly-infested piece of fruit!

This is another pest that would only do a group costume so that everyone matches. Fruit flies would probably enjoy doing a classic costume, such as M&M’s. Everyone in the group would wear a bright shirt with the “m” logo on the front to make it as easy and clear as possible. But their group would be too large for the 6 traditional M&M’s colors, so the outliers would improvise and say that they’re the holiday editions!

Moths – Pop Stars

Moths are really only a common Halloween pest because of all the porch lights! These pests use the light as a navigational tool to safely fly around the darkness. Their ideal light is the moon, but all of the artificial lights lead the nocturnal bugs away from the natural light. The moth’s goal is to always keep the light above them, whether or not it’s the light they’re supposed to use.

We think moths would want to dress up as pop stars for one simple reason: they love the spotlight. They would stand out by wearing all things shimmery and reflective. Sequined outfits, body glitter, and shiny jewelry would be the essential components. This has been the year of pop star dominance, so moths would have plenty of inspiration to draw from this Halloween. People would ask the moth to sing a song by its costume’s inspiration, and the moth would actually do it (for candy, of course!).
