Keep Unwanted House Guests Out with Tumwater Pest Control

Located south of Olympia, Tumwater is known for its natural beauty and rich history. Near Puget Sound, the town has a waterfall as its centerpiece as well as hiking trails and beaches nearby.

Tumwater also has a lot of pests. With so much water nearby and wet, humid weather year round, the entire state attracts insects such as bed bugs, bees, wasps, mosquitoes, spiders, fleas, lice, biting flies, ticks, and moths.

Don’t let pests take control of your household or business. Pointe Pest Control provides residential and commercial pest control services. Let us take care of your pest problems so you can focus on what’s important.

Preventing Infestation

The best way to prevent infestation is to keep pests out in the first place. Here are some things you can do to keep your home pest-free:

  • Remove any sources of food and water. Food attracts ants, rodents, and other pests. Mosquitoes tend to breed in water. Therefore, keep your home clean inside and out. Wipe down countertops and tables daily to remove food crumbs. Dump out any standing water outdoors, including buckets, pools, and water fountains. Check for faucet leaks that can cause puddles.
  • Store items in enclosed containers. Mice and ants can easily get into food. Pet food, rice, flour, and other food in your home should be stored in containers with a tight lid.
  • Dispose of garbage. Rats, flies, and ants are attracted to garbage. Empty trash cans in the home regularly and place garbage outside in a can with a lid.
  • Reduce clutter. Pests can hide in containers, stacks of paper, and boxes. Get rid of anything you don’t need to use. This will eliminate trip and fall hazards and keep pests out of your home.
  • Seal cracks or holes. Walls, baseboards, and window and door jambs may develop cracks and holes over time. Most insects are small enough to enter these holes and get into the home. Use caulk to seal in these cracks and holes to eliminate entry.

Signs of Pest Infestation

The most obvious sign of a pest infestation is actually seeing the insect or rodent. If you see multiple ants, rodents, bees, or other pests, then there are likely hundreds more hiding in or around your home. Here are some other signs to look for:

  • Droppings. Become familiar with the appearance of mouse droppings as well as egg casings. This will give you an idea of what kind of pest is living in your home.
  • Dead insects. Dead bugs can be a giveaway. If you see many of the same insect in window ledges, cracks, and dirty areas, then you likely have an infestation.
  • Evidence of nesting. Mice and other pests will make nests of shredded paper, hair, fur, and other debris. You might find these nests in corners or behind appliances.
  • Certain smells. Some pests give off certain smells. Bed bugs have a sweet, musty odor.  Mice tend to give off a urine-like smell, while rats smell like ammonia. Roaches have an “oily” odor.
  • Holes and bite marks. Mice and rats love to chew on things and your house may be one of them. If you notice bite marks or holes in your home, and you know it’s not your pet dog, then it’s likely a mouse or rat. These rodents also like to chew on electrical wires, so be on the lookout.

What Happens Next?

If you have an infestation, you can try to control it yourself. Hardware stores and home improvement stores often have ant spray, mouse traps, and other pesticides. You can use them around your house, but make sure to follow the instructions, as these chemicals can be harmful to children and pets.

While store-bought pesticides can provide temporary relief, you want long-term treatment. That’s why it’s a good idea to contact a pest control company right away. A company like Pointe Pest Control can give you peace of mind. We’ll give you an honest assessment of your home or business with no hidden fees or pressure.
