End of Summer Spider Control

By September 21, 2022Spiders

Summer is coming to an end and kids are going back to school. As temperatures cool down, insects and other creepy-crawly creatures tend to come out in search of warmth. Spiders are no exception.

Spiders are great for gardens, eating small bugs that could threaten plants and crops. But having them inside your home is a different story. Nobody wants spiders running across the floors — even harmless ones. It’s gross.

If you have been noticing more and more spiders in your home, you may wonder what to do to keep them under control. Do you need to hire a pest control service? You may be able to handle these eight-legged creatures on your own if you just have a few here and there, but you need to be thorough. The trick is to get rid of eggs and adults. Try these tips to rid your home of spiders.

Vacuum Your Home

Bust out the vacuum and start cleaning the entire house, from top to bottom. Spiders like to lay their eggs in dark crevices, so be thorough. Get into every corner and underneath all the furniture. Suck up any cobwebs, eggs, or spiders you see and make sure to get rid of the vacuum bag or dump the canister outdoors promptly.

Use Sticky Traps

If you still see spiders roaming around the house, add some traps. Sticky traps are easy to find at your local hardware store. They come in various designs and can lure spiders with various aromas (but no pesticides). Place them in areas where you have seen spiders lurking. Find out which traps have the most activity and focus on those rooms.

Seal Cracks and Holes

Spiders can easily get through cracks and crevices, so if you have any type of opening in a wall or window, chances are that’s how they’re getting into your home. So be proactive and go through your home, looking for drafts, cracks, and any other openings. Seal them with caulking. It may also be a good idea to place mesh over vents.

Make Your Home Less Attractive

You may want to make your home inviting to human guests, but not arachnids. Once you vacuum them and trap them, you don’t want to let them back in. Spiders are looking for warmth and shelter during the winter, so get rid of anything that might attract them. This includes leaf piles and stacked wood. Lights also attract spiders, so try to keep it dark as much as possible.
